CYNTHIA BEASLEY
Investigative Reporter, Anchor
“Excellent example of a hungry reporter staying with a story through all of its developments -- and taking time for research and ensuring fairness as best could be accomplished, given stonewalling, prepared statements and occasional lack of responses,” judges for the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters.

ABOUT ME
Cynthia Beasley is a national award-winning investigative journalist who has worked for TV stations in South Carolina and Virginia.
She's known for her tough questions, knack for humanizing stories and dogged pursuit of the truth. Her investigative reporting has made waves.
In 2025, she was awarded a National Edward R. Murrow Award for the "Price of Pursuit," an investigative series that gave an in-depth look at all aspects of police pursuits — from the cost to taxpayers to the human cost.
That same year, Cynthia was named South Carolina's "Reporter of the Year" by the South Carolina Broadcaster's Association. The association also chose her work as the first and second place winner for the "Investigative Reporting" award.
Cynthia won a Regional Edward R. Murrow award and was nominated for a Capital Emmy for “Best Continuing News." She won the 1st place award for the same category in the 2021 Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters Contest; breaking a national story about allegations that the country’s largest Evangelical university was covering up rape allegations, potentially violating federal Title IX laws. After her investigation, the Department of Education launched an investigation into the university. The department then levied the largest fine in history against the university for Clery Act violations. Dozens of women sued Liberty University after her reporting. The university president announced they would spend millions of dollars on increased campus security.
Cynthia was nominated for a Southeast Emmy for an investigation that found almost 40% of dogs euthanized at a municipal shelter were killed the same day they entered the shelter, leaving employees questioning if the shelter was violating a state law.
Her reporting has uncovered errors in several state and local systems, including a South Carolina municipal court. After analyzing years of cases, Cynthia found the court overcharged drivers more than $22,000 for blinker violations. After my reporting, the court admitted to the error, fixed their system and refunded fines to roughly one hundred people. In Virginia, she found an error in the Department of Motor Vehicles registration system that led to the DMV wrongfully taxing thousands of people. The DMV changed its systems and refunded thousands of dollars because of my reporting.
Her reporting led to legislation that will improve transparency from the SC Department of Transportation after a solutions-based investigation revealed a major road project was years delayed and millions over budget.
